Bred in New York and long proven in Canadian climates, Honeoye is an early to mid-season (June-bearing) variety that ripens about 10 days before Kent, making it an excellent season extender. It produces large, bright red, glossy berries averaging around 30 gm each, with exceptional firmness and eye-catching appeal. Perfect for U-pick operations and local market sales. The flavour is often compared to wild strawberries, aromatic, tangy-sweet, and full of character. Berries ripen from the top down, and the small white tip is a natural indicator for U-pick customers that the fruit will be fully ripe in about three days. Honeoye is known for its excellent yields, vigorous growth, and reliable productivity across a range of growing conditions. It performs best in well-drained loam soils, as fruit grown in sandy soils can develop a slightly bitter note. A grower’s favourite for its early season harvest, beautiful presentation, and consistent performance, Honeoye remains one of the most dependable varieties for jump-starting the strawberry season in Alberta. Most suitable for Southern Alberta.
